Community Spirit at Catton Grove Community Centre

A few weeks ago before the madness of Norwich Fashion Week happened I took a trip to Catton Grove Community Centre for the launch of their new for 2017 Community Lunches that take place on the first Tuesday of every month – 12.30pm – 2.30pm.

Funded and supported by the Health Lottery and People’s Health Trust with the aim to provide an affordable cooked meal, or light snacks including toasted sandwiches, jacket potatoes or fresh soup to people in the local area. And there is cake too!!

I learnt about this through my good friend Carmen Hyde Johnson who alongside volunteers cook, prepare and serve meals to those that attend.

Over lunch I chatted to Linda the centres Development Worker who told me that the lunches were set up to offer the local people who maybe isolated or live on their own to get out and meet new people. The idea is for them to chat over lunch and stay for the various activities that they are developing such as card games, bingo. film shows, craft sessions and workshops.

As well as giving the local community a place to go its aim is to get local people back into employment by giving them a chance to gain or improve their skills with training, cooking and basic hygiene courses giving them an opportunity to get back to work.

Volunteers are always need so if you would like to help by preparing, serving or if you have a skill that you would like to share for the social activity session after lunch then get in touch with the centre.

This is an amazing centre that is doing great things to support the local community – it was a great privilege to meet the fabulous people involved.
